How is the interplay between artificial intelligence and language shaping our communication? These and other questions were the focus of the first MediaTech Turntable, which was organized by the MediaTech Hub Innovator on Tuesday, 7 May 2024.
The event started at 6:30 p.m.: Interested participants gathered at the UFA building in Potsdam-Babelsberg just in time for the end of the working day to learn more about voice-based AI systems and talk about the opportunities and risks at the after-work event. However, it was not essential to have specialist knowledge to take part in the discussions, but above all curiosity and interest.
Lasse Kohlmeyer, project manager at the Hasso Plattner Institute‘s AI Service Center Berlin-Brandenburg, provided input. In a brief introduction, he explained what AI actually is and how voice-based AI systems work. During the discussion rounds, Lasse Kohlmeyer was also available to the participants as an AI expert and contact person.
After the input, the discussions continued directly, which were organized according to the principle of a world café. The participants were divided into a total of three groups. There were also three stations, each with a question. The groups worked on one discussion question per round. At the end of a predefined time, the groups rotated in order to deal with the next question at the next station. They also drew on what the other groups had already worked out on this issue. The questions asked centered on whether AI interpreters will ever again make it necessary to learn another language, what the future of human-AI interaction could look like – especially with regard to language-based technologies – and when AI supports creativity and when it tends to inhibit it.
At the end of the discussion rounds, the results were summarized and presented once again. Afterwards, the participants had the opportunity to network over snacks and cool drinks and to discuss the topic of the after-work event in more detail.
The MediaTech Turntable is an event format of the MTH Innovator. There will be more events in this series in the future, although the topics will vary. Further information on upcoming events will be announced in good time.
