Ever since flagship projects such as 1899 and The Mandalorian, virtual production has been considered the future of filmmaking. In practice, however, producers have often faced steep hurdles: complex technology, high costs, and the enormous effort required for tracking or rendering.
On 23 March 2026, we will continue our dialogue format with the latest edition, “The Green Couch: MediaTech meets… Virtual Production. Between Aspiration and Reality”. This edition examines the current state of the technology and discusses an exciting pilot project: “Virtual Production Put to the Test”. The venue? A very special one. We are heading to where the innovation happens: right into the heart of Studio Babelsberg, Studio 11 – fx.Center.
The Pilot Project: Virtual Production Put to the Test With the support of the Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg and RTL, the Babelsberg location is undertaking a practical test for the industrialisation of virtual production. As part of an innovative pilot project, digital, AI-driven workflows are being systematically trialled for series production for the very first time. The aim is to virtually reproduce real spaces within a hybrid studio infrastructure and to optimise the technology through extensive automation, ensuring it functions smoothly even within the tight schedule of a daily series production.
