With the help of virtual reality, surgeons are trained on surgical robots in a playful way. <\/strong>

Precise cuts, small wounds: when surgeons use the extended arms of surgical robots to perform minimally invasive surgery, i.e. the smallest incisions in tissue, they have possibly practised this beforehand by using the virtual reality training programme from the Potsdam-based animation animation studio Baby Giant Hollyberg<\/a>.

The VR experts were commissioned by Avatera<\/a>, a manufacturer of medical robots based in Jena, to create a digital environment with several levels to train surgeons on operating the robot. A training programme which is necessary before one can actually obtain a surgical license.

Medical robots are now in great demand, especially in surgery, where they are used for key operations in gynaecology and urology. Precise and careful work is an important guarantee for a successful operation. The extended arm in the form of the technical assistant takes over from the doctor’s famous “steady hand” .\u00a0

Avatera’s model could have also originated from the set of a science fiction film. It is enthroned in the operating theatre with four large arms and is controlled by a computer. During the training programme, you sit at the controller and simultaneously lean with your body into the VR glasses. Baby Giant Hollyberg collaborated with another two other partner companies, who were responsible for the programming (ITK Engineering, Berlin<\/a>) and the user interface (DesignLab, Weimar<\/a>), on the digital simulation and developing the concept and visualisation.\u00a0

A certain approach was important at the outset. The VR training programme had to introduce the users to basic functionalities and then work out the nuances that would later be so essential in the operating theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


“How\u00a0can\u00a0we\u00a0succeed\u00a0in\u00a0designing\u00a0a\u00a0training\u00a0course\u00a0in such a\u00a0way\u00a0that\u00a0it\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0motivating?” was\u00a0another\u00a0important\u00a0consideration.\u00a0To\u00a0this\u00a0end, Baby Giant\u00a0Hollyberg’s\u00a0team\u00a0installed\u00a0high score\u00a0lists,\u00a0hurdles\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0next\u00a0level\u00a0and\u00a0reminder\u00a0e-mails. The\u00a0gamification\u00a0elements\u00a0keep\u00a0the\u00a0users\u00a0interestedand\u00a0provide\u00a0moments\u00a0of\u00a0success. A\u00a0whole\u00a0obstacle\u00a0course\u00a0of\u00a0tasks\u00a0has\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0mastered\u00a0within\u00a0thetwelve\u00a0levels.\u00a0Instead\u00a0of\u00a0handling\u00a0blood\u00a0vessels\u00a0and\u00a0nerve\u00a0cords,\u00a0the\u00a0surgeons\u00a0are\u00a0now\u00a0working\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0digital\u00a0simulation\u00a0with\u00a0Lego\u00a0bricks\u00a0being\u00a0sorted\u00a0into\u00a0boxes,\u00a0glass\u00a0balls\u00a0lifted\u00a0out\u00a0of\u00a0bowlswithout\u00a0being\u00a0broken,\u00a0or\u00a0needles\u00a0with\u00a0thread\u00a0that\u00a0has\u00a0to\u00a0be\u00a0fed\u00a0around\u00a0different\u00a0surfaces. Little\u00a0bylittle,\u00a0they\u00a0advance\u00a0in a\u00a0playful\u00a0way\u00a0toward\u00a0those\u00a0skills\u00a0that\u00a0are\u00a0then\u00a0used\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0real\u00a0operation. The\u00a0surgeons\u00a0get\u00a0a\u00a0feel\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0right\u00a0atmosphere\u00a0because\u00a0they\u00a0can\u00a0see\u00a0a\u00a0blurred\u00a0image\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0operatingtheatre\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0background\u00a0through\u00a0the\u00a0VR\u00a0glasses.\u00a0

However,\u00a0the\u00a0target\u00a0group\u00a0–\u00a0and\u00a0particularly\u00a0the\u00a0experienced,\u00a0older\u00a0surgeons\u00a0–\u00a0is\u00a0not\u00a0known\u00a0forbeing\u00a0typical\u00a0gamer\u00a0and\u00a0game\u00a0console\u00a0fans.\u00a0It\u00a0was\u00a0important\u00a0to\u00a0devise\u00a0a\u00a0programme\u00a0for\u00a0them\u00a0thatdidn’t\u00a0seem\u00a0too\u00a0pompous\u00a0or\u00a0distract\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0essential,\u00a0yet\u00a0was\u00a0simultaneously\u00a0sufficientlychallenging. The VR\u00a0specialists\u00a0from\u00a0Babelsberg\u00a0could\u00a0draw\u00a0on\u00a0their\u00a0many\u00a0years\u00a0of\u00a0working\u00a0in\u00a0theworld\u00a0of\u00a0entertainment\u00a0to\u00a0achieve\u00a0this\u00a0balance\u00a0between\u00a0entertainment,\u00a0quality\u00a0and\u00a0visuallyappealing\u00a0design. As an\u00a0animation\u00a0and\u00a0virtual\u00a0reality\u00a0studio\u00a0operating\u00a0out\u00a0of\u00a0Potsdam-Babelsberg\u00a0and\u00a0Los Angeles,\u00a0they\u00a0actually\u00a0come\u00a0from\u00a0the\u00a0film\u00a0industry.
